Overview:

The Canadian capture of Carpiquet village created a serious threat to the German defense of Caen, preventing observation of the British operating in the Odon Valley to the south and compromising German positions to the north of the city. The SS were again ordered to remedy the situation. SS-Panzerkorps I committed its last operational reserve: SS-Panzer-Division 1 "Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler." The divisions SS-Panzergrenadier-Regiment 1 formed up around Franqueville, north of Carpiquet. Supported by fresh armor and artillery, the SS Panzergrenadiers struck south in a bid to retake the village.
