Overview:
During the Stalingrad campaign, Lt. Col. Gheorghe Rascanescu earned the German’s highest honor, the Ritterkreuz, for the defense of Oblivkavia airfield. He would continue to serve the Axis well. By August 1944, he led a detachment of Romanian armor and infantry supported by the 1st Motorized Artillery Regiment. This detachment dug in around the critical communication hub of Mardarjak. On the 21st, around noon, this detachment was attacked by a powerful Russian force. The Russians were easily repulsed by the Romanians, but three successive attacks immediately followed. . .Attacker: Russian (72nd Guards Rifle Division)
