Overview:
Located on the southeastern tip of Papua, Milne Bay was selected as the location for an Allied base including three airstrips. However, in doing so the base became a target for the Japanese as a potentially valuable base of their own. On the night of August 25, 1942, some 2,000 Japanese Marines of the 5th Kure SNLF landed to capture the airfields but were dropped off 11 kilometers from their planned landing zone, and the fighting over the next few days telegraphed their intentions to the Allied commanders.Attacker: Japanese (5th Kure SNLF and 362nd Naval Pioneer Unit)
