Overview:

The Soviet Union grabbed Bessarabia from Romania in 1940. This was a national humiliation forced on Romania which caused a burning desire of revenge in many Romanians. Bloodshed followed this insult in April when NKVD Border guards executed over 3,000 Romanians in the Fântâna Albã massacre. This guaranteed a military attack by the Armata Romana (Royal Romanian Army) across the border if an opportunity arose. Romanian leadership gladly joined Operation Barbarossa with the specific goal of taking back Bessarabia knowing, if successful, the kingdom would become much beloved by the populace. The main attack to take Bessarabia’s capital, Kishinev, would be overseen by the III Corps’ 35th Infantry Division which was composed primarily of reservists.
