Overview:

After capturing Shanghai and Nanjing in 1937, Japanese forces advanced toward Wuhan in 1938 along the Yellow and Yangtze. When Chinese troops flooded the Yellow River, the main Japanese effort shifted to the Yangtze. The Japanese 11th Army included the 6th, 9th, 27th, 101st, and 106th Divisions as well as the Hata Detachment. The 101st and 106th were reserve formations with less training and experience, and they operated south of the Yangtze. Advancing along the Nanxun Railway, the 106th Division was trapped by forces under Xue Yue, who encircled it with sixteen Chinese divisions.
