Overview:
The Soviet invasion of northern Finland commenced in December of 1939. In order to support the advance of the 163rd Rifle Division and 44th Motorized Rifle Division to the north, 54th Rifle Division was tasked with cutting off any Finnish reinforcements that might be dispatched from central Finland. After crossing the border, the 54th Division advanced rapidly towards the village of Kuhmo and by 1 January was only 15 kilometers away from the settlement. Following the destruction of the 163rd Rifle Division and 44th Motorized Rifle Division at the Battle of Suomassalmi, the Finnish High Command turned its attention to Kuhmo. The 54th Rifle Division, meanwhile, had been suffering the privations of one of the coldest and harshest winters on record. On 28 January – though running low on ammunition and lacking anything resembling armor or artillery support – the Finns attacked.Attacker: Finnish (11th Infantry Division, 20th Corps, Army of the Isthmus)
