Overview:
The village of Carpiquet and its airfield lay west of Caen, a first day objective of Operation OVERLORD that stubbornly remained in German hands four weeks later. The airstrip could prove useful to Allied airpower; more importantly, the hangars on its southern edge offered a commanding view of the Odon River valley to the south and the approaches to Hill 112, a key position guarding the western flank of Caen. Operation WINDSOR tasked 3rd Canadian Division with the capture of the village and the airfield, as a prelude to assaults on Hill 112 and Caen itself. Opposing the attack was SS-Panzer-Division 12 "Hitlerjugend," first encountered by the Canadians on 7 June in the village of Authie. The two formations had tangled many times since, but this would be the last and bloodiest clash in their bitter month-long feud.Attacker: Canadian (Royal Winnipeg Rifles, Régiment de la Chaudère, North Shore Regiment, Queens Own Rifles of Canada, 8th Infantry Brigade, and 10th Armoured Regiment (Fort Garry Horse))
Defender: German (Bataillon I, SS-Panzergrenadier-Regiment 26, SS_Panzer-Division 12 "Hitlerjugend" with SS-Panzer-Regiment 12)
