Overview:
On 6 July 1950, just north of the South Korean village of Pyongtaek, the U.S. 24th Infantry Division had quickly learned that rather than facing a weak, untrained enemy, the North Korean Army was deadly serious. After several sharp engagements with the North Koreans, the American troops withdrew southward, leaving behind most of their heavy weapons, ammunition and other equipment. Eighth Army ordered the 24th Infantry Division to delay the North Korean advance to allow other U.S. forces to flow into the country. Unable to hold for long in the face of strong KPA pressure, the 24th Division's elements were driven from one hastily-established defensive position to another. The morning of 12th July 1950 found the 1st Battalion, 34th Infantry astride several ridges overlooking the road leading south from Ch'onan to the Kum River and Kongju.Attacker: North Korean (16th Regiment, 4th Division)
