The tallest hill overlooking Taegu was Hill 902, and at its apex stood the ancient Gasansanseong fortress-which was known to the GIs as the "Walled City." Ascending the craggy steep hill 2,900 feet above sea level, Lt. William McClain's Company E of the 8th Cavalry Regiment fought through KPA patrols and small arms fire to relieve a company of Lt. Col. William Holley's 8th Engineer Battalion, who had been laying minefields along the front slope of the Walled City of Ka-san.
