Overview:
Operation EPSOM was Field Marshall Montgomery's third attempt to take Caen. This time his plan was to envelope the city from the west and then break into the open tank country. This would force the German panzer divisions to focus on the British and hopefully allow the Americans some flexibility to expand the Normandy beachhead. With the bridge over the Odon River at Tourmauville taken on 27 June, the 11th Armoured Division had an excellent platform for exploitation and advance to the next river, the Orne. with the Germans seemingly indifferent to the growing threat, the 23rd Hussars and supporting infantry advanced toward the top of the locally dominate heights of Hill 112.Attacker: British (8th Battalion, Rifle Brigade, and B and C Squadron, 23rd Hussars, 29th Armoured Brigade, 11th Armoured Division)
