Overview:
In the four days since the Salerno landings, Allied casualties had been high as they beat back repeated German counterattacks. The fighting raged on in the hills above Albanella, but as Monday dawned the rest of the VI Corps' beachhead was relatively quiet. That quiet was about to be shattered, however, as four powerful German kampfgruppen moved into position to assault.
