Overview:
STAVKA suspected that the German Army in the region was weak, so a spring offensive was launched, aiming at the recapture of Kharkov, and the destruction of enemy forces in and around the city. The massive two-pronged attack made good progress the first week. It had been anticipated, but the intensity of the attack caught the Germans by surprise. Unfortunately for the attackers, their intelligence branch had provided an overly optimistic view of German strength in the area, who in response started their own two-pronged counteroffensive.
