Overview:
Late in the morning on 17 February, Captain Joe Conway and the men of M Company could hear Japanese voices coming from behind the large steel doors that led down to the powder magazine at Battery Morrison. Using a bazooka they managed to blast open the outer door, but before they could repeat the process on the inner door they were forced to beat a hasty retreat when the Japanese within began tossing out dozens of hand grenades through two small openings. The following day, LT Bill Blake, SGT Roy King and CPL Charles Hill, collectively known as "the demo men", assembled a device they called, "the infernal machine" to drop down the ventilation shaft of the powder magazine. The device consisted of a five gallon gas can filled with gas and napalm, with WP grenades, dynamite, and two fuses attached. As LT Blake leaned over the vent preparing to lower the contraption by rope, he was startled by a Japanese voice calling out in perfect English from the darkness below. The Japanese voice called out, "I wouldn't do that if I were you; there is very much dynamite down here. You will blow us all up".Attacker: American (503rd Regimental Combat Team)
Defender: Japanese (Army Provisional Battalion, Manila Bay Entrance Force)
