Overview:
The 16th Brigade of the 17th Indian Division had been given the task of halting the Japanese advance at the Bilin River. Most of the Brigade were to take up positions on the west side of the river. The 5/17th Dogras were to hold an outpost on the exposed eastern side of the river on high ground astride the main road. The Japanese 55th and 33rd Divisions were pushing toward the river in force from the east. Fearing the Dogras would be trapped on the wrong side of the river, Brigade headquarters ordered them to pull back across the river into the village. By the time the Dogras began to withdraw, the Japanese had managed to establish a position on the road between the Dogras and the bridge. The only routes of escape left to the Dogras was a ford to the west and a rail bridge to the south.Attacker: Japanese (215th Regiment, 33 Division)
