Overview:

At dawn on 17 June the Germans launched an attack along the entire front facing Maxim Gorki I. This attack was preceded by artillery and Stuka-strikes, aimed at Russian front-line positions. The Russian troops in the most-forward trenches has suffered at the hands of the srtillery attacks fro days. The 514th Rifle Regiment, a shadow of its former self, initially was able to hold the line. As German pressure grew, these stalwarts, too, broke and the line to the south of Maxim Gorki I was torn open.
