Overview:
On the morning of the 20th, the 94th Reconnaissance Troop and the Divisional Headquarters Defense Platoon, which had requested action, assembled at the crossroads in Wies before heading toward Schloss Thorn. This force, organized in two platoons, was supported by two light and two medium tanks. Arrangements had been made for a five-minute artillery barrage to facilitate the attack. At 0700, the advance started, but was immediately hit by enemy mortar and artillery fire.
