Overview:
"The Taxis of Tobruk" -- On 21 January 1941, the Australian 6th Division stormed the important port of Tobruk. If the fortifications were powerful, its defenders were demoralized by the scope of defeats suffered since December and the recent fall of Bardia, to the east. Once the outside perimeter was pierced with the assistance of the 7th RTR Matildas, the Australians moved to assault the second Italian position. The 2/8th Battalion, accompanied by some of the vehicles 6th Divisional Cavalry Regiment and British machine gunners of the Northumberland Fusiliers attacked in the direction of Fort Pilastrino on the west of the escarpment leading to the port, where was supposed to be located the command post of the 61st "Sirte" Division. The Battalion was facing a defensive system combining antitank guns and partially dug-in tanks. Their first goal was a cross roads baptized "King's Cross".Attacker: Australian (Reinforced elements of 2/8th Battalion)
