Overview:

In early September 1944, the Allied armies' wild chase across France was starting to slow down with growing supply problems and stiffening resistance from the supposedly beaten German Army. Although the bulk of Patton's Third Army was stalled, elements of 3rd Cavalry Group broke out and got as far as Thionville on the Moselle river. During the afternoon of 2 September, a cavalry platoon charged the Thionville bridge on their steel horses. - - - - In this six-turn scenario the Americans, in jeeps and armored cars, must capture the bridge during the first turn and prevent its recapture by counter-attacking German infantry and assault guns.

2024-05-03(A) Jack Wilson vs Steve Cook German winWarning: before you start this one READ the VC. Turns out Steve and both missed the minor detail that if the Americans don't control both bridge hexes by Turn 1 they lose. Although I got the bridge on T 2, technically I should have lost before the game even started. As it turned out the Americans held on until a German T 5 mad dash to the Bridge survived multiple -2 IFT shots to get one shell-shocked squad onto the bridge for the win.

An SSR permitted the Americans to remove the MG from their Jeeps. But it was not clear if this applied only to the inherent crew or to the passengers as well. The two of us made a few other rules mistakes so it probably was a wash. The dice bot was unkind to both of us, but Steve's competent play overcame lady luck.

Worth a replay.
2022-10-22(A) Vic Lauterbach vs JM German winI drew the Amis in this little fight which plays like a "Rat Patrol" episode. Given Jim's fondness for ad hoc German counterattacks, I expected to be hard pressed. In GTs 1-2, I scattered the Germans west of the river, parked M8s on the bridge and unloaded the MMGs to lay down firelanes around a 20W1-V2-S4-M4-K2-K1 perimeter. Jim hit both flanks using the cover along the riverbanks. I lost buildings K1 and W1 but broke enough MMCs to stall both attacks. I lost a CC in 40N6, so instead of finishing off Jim's 236s west of the river, I had a HS and HoB 7-0 that I had to kill on the bridge in CC! In GT4, Jim blasted me out of L2 and drove the StuGs at my weak right flank. He methodically made a final push with 447s using assault movement. I got one with a rear 37LL shot but missed with IF and the BAZ44. One 447 got through all my FF/RF into 40Q2 for the win. It was fun playing a US force lacking the ususal massive FP, but I think the US player needs the balance (a second BAZ44) to hang on.
