Overview:
The Germans in Normandy had been thoroughly beaten and were retreating for the Seine as hard as they could, with the Falaise Gap having seen one of the greatest slaughters of the war. The 5th Seaforths were pursuing the retreating enemy in the Grandchamp area. Late in the afternoon of the 21st, they were ordered to seize the village and crossroads at la Corne. It was captured without opposition; the only Germans in the area being a work party who fired one burst of Schmeisser fire (which killed four men) and then fled. The 'Jocks' dug in. In the morning, the men were cooking breakfast when the sentries suddenly came racing back, sped on their way by gunfire. The Seaforths dashed for their weapons as a large group of Germans approached, firing and yelling.Attacker: German (Elements of the 272nd Infantry Division)
