Overview:

By early 1943, the Australian troops of Kanga Force had successfully defended Wau, forcing the Japanese on the defensive in this part of New Guinea. In the quiet months that followed, the Australians reorganized, deploying new units with the aim of keeping pressure on the Japaneses coastal garrisons at Lae and Salamaua. One key location is support of this strategy was Lababia Ridge. The Australian 2/7th Battalion was initially assigned this area and met stout Japanese resistance. The 2/6th Battalion replaced its sister unit by early June. On 20 June, two battalions from the Japanese 66th Infantry Regiment launched an attack on the Lababia Ridge area, concentrating on Captain Walter Dexter's Company D, 2/6th Battalion.

2023-08-10(A) Jeff B vs Steve Etzelmueller Japanese winDon't let the card fool you. This is basically a half-board game (as are many in this pack), which makes it too small for my liking. My opponent concentrated almost all his force on an alamo defense of U6. This would make for an extremely difficult task, having to navigate brutal terrain and then crest a heavily-fortified hill position through much open ground. I took the first VC hex with little opposition, and thankfully I had two mortars with smoke. I was able to place some on the SW hill and some at the approach of the big hill. I grabbed the second VC hex with little difficulty, so now the fully-concentrated assault could begin on the big hill. The good news about this being a small playing area, and given fair length (6 turns) was that I could bide my time and set things up properly. My reinforcements entered in the south moving up into the wooded hill, while the rest of my men ringed the hill. He made what I consider to be somewhat a tactical blunder entering his men as far north as possible to try and create some problems in my back line, but the terrain up there is just too brutal and too easy to repulse. I think he would'e been better served entering nearer the VC hex. I actually spent the next couple turns laying more smoke and softening him up with shooting, and even getting some men up on the hill concealed. In the end he just couldn't stand up to my numbers as I softened him up some more and then threw a Turn 5 banzai on him to overwhelm his last two good order hexes, busted him up more with advance fire, and finished the job with some boody CC. In the end he had one good order squad and leader left.
