Overview:

For the 96th Infantry Division, April 5 marked the beginning of facing stiff enemy resistance on Okinawa. Driving through the green rolling country east of the Ginowan road, the 382nd unmasked a series of fortified positions, many of them protected by minefields. Each positions caused American casualties and required enveloping maneuvers. Well camouflaged Japanese troops, supported by tanks, attacked the 1st Battalion during the afternoon. But the attack was broken up by artillery, mortar and machine-gun fire. During the day, the 382nd gained about 400 yards in the east and 900 yards to the west.

2025-10-30(D) Jeff B vs John Fedoriw Japanese win13 hrsInitial round of Ami entry saw them make a push for the eastern edge. The next batch entered in the middle and bottom of Board 36, while the Board 35 forces made for the western edge. Needless to say it was a quiet couple turns for me, and I did something I rarely ever do - dig a bunch of foxholes in preparation for all the upcoming Ami OBA. I did shift forces on Board 36 to bolster the Hill 526 defense, as I felt this would be a crucial spot. I was very surprised he didn't try and situate some kill stacks on either Hill 502 or 507 to duke it out with me, but he was very concerned about the lack of cover and all the multiple ROF eyes I'd have on him (perhaps rightly so). Turn 3 saw first contact as he ran into a HIP unit in the NW wooded tendril of Hill 526. As would be a common tactic for me throughout the game, I simply broke and ran away. My reinforcements had freedom of movement as he wasn't even close to having anyone with LOS to them. Turn 4 saw the first casualties as two of my HIP HS were unable to get away. I had a line of defenders along the Hill 615 road, while he was on the doorstep of testing my Hill 526 defenses. Turn 5 saw the first Ami casualties when two HS went down, while I traded three of my own in the process. He backed off his threat on Hill 526 and moved to consolidate for a push up the middle of the boards. Turn 6 saw him drop some OBA WP to shroud his approach up the middle. It turned one of my broken HS fanatic. He lost a squad to a thrown DC from me. Turn 7 saw me lose another two HS, and he was making progress in both the middle and west pushing my line ever backwards. But when Turn 8 saw the rain finally start (something I'd been hoping for since the start), and his radio lose contact during a crucial juncture, he threw in the towel. I honestly thought he was in a position to start pounding me with some serious Ami firepower, and with all his 3 ROF weapons I was concerned I wouldn't be able to shuffle enough bodies to stand up to him. But he was worried about the CVP cap, and had yet to run into any mines (his sixth sense kept him from moving into two such spots earlier), With time running low, the terrain being very funneling, and his lack of enjoyment of the slogfest this was he just felt it wasn't worth continuing. With the constant shuffling I had to do with my defense, and the many tricks up my sleeve, I enjoyed this scenario much more than he did, and would play it again as either side.
