Overview:
After the fall of Rome, the French Expeditionary Corps in Italy (FEC) opened its Italian summer campaign on June 10th along a 25 km front. To carry out its mission of pushing the Germans in front of it north towards Sienna, General Juin set up a “chasing” corps of two infantry divisions, both reinforced with a U.S. armored battalion. Strong German resistance was not felt until June 17th in front of the village of Radicofani. . .Attacker: Free French (3ème Compagnie, 1er Bataillon de Legion Etrangère, 1ère Division de Marche d'Infanterie/2ème Compagnie, 1er Bataillon de Legion Etrangère, 1ère Division de Marche d'Infanterie)

| 2026-07-23 | (D) Todd G | vs | David | A | Free French win (VASL Log) | With Castle Medici newly secured in Free French hands, the German garrison at Radicofani scrambled to assemble a hasty defense for the storm that was sure to follow. As forward elements of the 2ème Compagnie entered the edge of town, German troops dug into several key buildings, while a few squads established positions high up on the square. Caution governed the French approach along the southwest edge, spurred by lingering reports of an emplaced German PaK 40 anti-tank gun and a deadly Flak 38. Yet, the sheer momentum of the French assault proved irresistible, quickly overwhelming the forward German positions. In the push, the French uncovered the exact locations of the enemy guns. Undeterred, they skillfully pivoted their attack to the east—catching the Germans off guard just as they were reinforcing the west. Following a brief, tactical retreat, the French launched a fierce counterattack to the northeast, taking care to leave behind enough troops to reinforce their newly won foothold at Castle Medici. Though German gunners managed to keep the castle's small garrison temporarily pinned down, French machine-gun and mortar squads quickly turned their sights on the Germans holding the hill. For a tense moment, the assault threatened to stall. Then came the breakthrough: the resilient garrison at the castle managed to knock out the German PaK 40. Capitalizing instantly, they surged across the street in a furious push, synchronized perfectly with a devastating mortar barrage that inflicted heavy casualties on the hill's defenders. Seizing the opening, a platoon of Free French legionnaires rushed the deadly Flak 38 directly. The assault came at a terrible cost—the gun's brutal fire decimated the platoon, wiping out all but a single surviving squad. Yet near the castle, as desperate German soldiers rushed to reman their fallen anti-tank gun, the remaining French forces sweeping through the street proved far too overwhelming, and the position was rapidly overrun. Surrounded, their heavy guns silenced, and with only a single squad left to resist, the remaining German defenders had no choice but to abandon their posts. They fled Radicofani, leaving the town firmly and safely in Free French hands. | |

| 2026-03-20 | (A) Alvaro Radigales | vs | German | Free French win | The German 75 malfunctioned in turn 2 leaving the West flank exposed and letting the bulk of the French forces through, while the rest held the fortified building and captured the large building East of the hill. The 20mm AA kept peppering the fortified position, but was often pinned by the mortar, and the crew eventually broke from long-range rifle fire. Fantastic scenario. | ||

| 2025-01-21 | (A) Mark Peak | vs | Dan Leader | Free French win | I attacked from all sides and rolled well out of the box. I left my mortar in the set up area and decided to use the MMC to attack. My units in the fortified building did some damage and kept movement to a minimum for the Germans. I was slowed down trying to take the building on the hill on the north flank but once it fell if started to fall apart for the Germans. The last hope was his guns but when the North gun malfunctioned, the game was lost. |
