Overview:

Company D, Royal Hamilton Light Infantry had recently made an unsupported night attack to capture a patch of woods that had been the staging area for many counterattacks by the 116th “Greyhound” Panzer Division. Given the importance of the woods line for unobserved staging, a counterattack was quickly ordered.

2021-10-23(D) Peter Catchpole vs Paul Legg Canadian winMy first night scenario, and the rules weren't as difficult as I had expected. I did read the articles in Out of the Attic before playing which helped. Also helped that Paul knows night rules. Knowing when and how to place starshells is a black art - and a few times I managed to illuminate my troops while leaving Paul's units able to fire at them while remaining in darkness.
Canadian player needs to read the setup conditions carefully. I managed to set up a half squad not in a foxhole or building (which was removed from play). also the NVR hinderance rules make woods less attractive defensive terrain.
The game swung from attacker to defender throughout. On Turn 2 I couldn't see how Paul could win. But by Turn 4 Paul had captured two of the 3 victory hexes. But it is tough for the attacker especially as the single hex buildings have cellars. Image of the position at the end of the game attached with every counter within 3 hexes of the last untaken victory hex.
There were quite a few memorable moments: a half-track using excessive speed breakdown to force its way through a hedge (it passed both rolls). The Canadian radio leader landing OBA on his own hex (the attaching units were unscathed and subsequently killed him in CC). I fired at a broken German 9-1 leader that was unlikely to rally anytime soon - which subsequently rolled 1:1 on its MC and became a heroic 9-2 following HOB (seems like a rookie error that I have made way too many times).
Sadly no units strayed - I was particularly hoping one of the German AFV's driving off in the distance.
Definitely pro-Canadian because of the cellars.
