Overview:
In 1943 the island of Kefalonia was occupied by approximately 12.000 Italian soldiers of the “Acqui” Division but only 2.000 German troops. Following the announcement of the armistice, the German Wehrmacht, specifically the 1st Mountain Division, demanded the immediate disarmament of their former Italian allies General Antonio Gandin, commander of the Acqui Division, faced a severe dilemma. Despite receiving direct orders from Rome to treat the Germans as enemies and resist disarmament, he initially sought negotiations. However, following a vote among his own soldiers, who largely opted to fight the Germans, Gandin ordered resistance. This decision transformed the former allies into enemies.
