Overview:
The 30th Infantry Division had crossed the Rhine. The 120th Infantry Regiment captured, Mallen and was moving east. Company B, 744th Light Tank Battalion and 3rd Platoon, Company B, 823rd Tank Destroyer Battalion just crossed the Rhine on LCMs and were now attached to Lieutenant Colonel Chris McCullough's 3rd Battalion, 120th Infantry in order to exploit an opportunity for an unanticipated breakthrough beyond the railroad east of Möllen. At 1630 hours, Company K mounted up on Company B's M24 Chaffee tanks and the column quickly headed east to Rotthaushoff. The rest of the battalion followed on foot. The tanks first engaged elements of Generalmajor Bernhard Klosterkemper' s 180th Infantry Division just west of Rotthaushoff, moved through the village proper and then engaged a retreating artillery battery on the far side of the village.
