Overview:

As part of the Second Battle of Kharkov, the Soviet 6th Army was attacking northwest near the Barvenkovo bridgehead. After failing to secure his initial objectives the previous day, Lieutenant Colonel M. G. Grigorey renewed the 253rd Rifle Division's assault on the village of Verkhnyi Bishkin. Here, Generalleutnant Rudolf Friedrich's 62nd Infantry Division had retreated to the village the previous day and was now conducting a spirited defense at this key strongpoint. The attacking 253rd Rifle Division soldiers were a combination of experienced survivors of earlier fighting and newly assigned personnel (with limited training) being led by a small cadre NCOs, many of whom had been previously wounded and were now returning to duty. A few T-60 tanks from the 48th Tank Brigade provided close infantry support for the main attack. Heavy fighting ensued all around Verkhnyi Bishkin.
