Overview:

After the Battle of Arnhem, Montgomery shifted his focus to the area below Nijmegen as another road into Germany. This required the elimination of the German-held Venlo Bridgehead west of the Meuse river. This area, called De Peel, consisted of swamps and small woods, with many canals and streams, which were ideal for the defender. The Allied High Command assigned the task to the American 7th Armored Division. The German defense in this area was assigned to Kampfgruppe Walther, a mixed force of Fallschirmjäger strengthened by recently arrived armor. The American commanders from Army level down were quite convinced that they would soon achieve their mission. After all, they only faced a few thousand infantry and a handful of tanks. Walther and his rag tag band of men would prove them wrong, very wrong indeed.
