Overview:
In the early morning hours of 4 July, salvoes of 16-inch shells from HMS Rodney slammed into German positions around Carpiquet village and its nearby airstrip. Canadian infantry battalions followed up in the early dawn, advancing with the intention of capturing both objectives. French Canadians from the Régiment de la Chaudière, supported by the 10th Armoured Regiment (Fort Garry Horse), moved forward in the center to capture the northernmost hangars of the airfield, while the North Shore Regiment and Queen's Own Rifles of Canada Regiment on their left flank pushed forward to take the village itself. The Chauds were immediately greeted by their fanatical and now-familiar nemesis: SS-Panzer-Division 12 "Hitlerjugend." The Hitler Youth had their own priorities: hold Carpiquet, the airfield, and its hangars, and add another chapter to their growing blood feud with the Canadians.Attacker: Canadian (Régiment de la Chaudère, 8th Infantry Brigade, 3rd Canadian Infantry Division and 10th Armoured Regiment (Fort Garry Horse))
