Rhein's 520 men of Grenadier Regiment 980 formed up south of Bergstein, where they made final coordination with Hauptmann Gerhard Turke and his four SthG IIIs and six Jagdpanzer IV/70s that would support the attack. The German attack began at 0645 as their artillery shifted fire to th northen portion of Bergstein. In the dim morning light, the grenadiers advanced across 300 meters of snow covered ground to reach the southern edge of Bergstein.
