Overview:
As part of Operation FRÜHLINGSERWACHEN (SPRING AWAKENING), German Heeresgruppe E attacked Allied forces from Yugoslavia towards the town of Donji Miholjac on the Drava River. Bulgaria - never an enthusiastic partner to begin with - had recently defected from the Axis alliance and subsequently joined the Allies. They had even committed troops, something they hadn't had to do much as an Axis partner. Launching an assault reminiscent of their early pincer attacks, the Germans aimed to surround and annihilate both the Soviet 57th Army and the 1st Bulgarian Army, which were at that moment west of the Danube and north of Drava.Attacker: German (Infanterie-Division 297)
