Overview:

The British IX Corps was tasked with taking the last hill barriers in southwest Tunisia where they could interdict the Axis retreating from the east. The British IX Corps assigned the main objective to the American 34th Infantry Division. They were to seize the hill ridge south of Fondouk El Aquareb while the British 128th Infantry Brigade was to clear the hills on the Americans' left. The area was defended by Kampfgruppe Wolf, which consisted of German, Italian and native Arab troops. The attack wa kicked off on the 8th , but it was then delayed for hours waiting for air support that never arrived. After a brief start, it was bogged down. So the attack was tried again on April 9th, sans air support. The 34th's attack was quickly pinned down from fire from both the front, their left flank and dive-bombers. The 751st Armored Battalion was sent in for support.
