Overview:

The first contingent of Australian volunteers formed the 6th Division, 2nd Australian Imperial Force, and after many months of training in Egypt and Palestine were keen to get into the war. Up to four divisions of the Italian 10th Army were bottled up in the frontier fortress of Bardia, a small port town on the vital road along the Libyan coast. The Australians, supported by British armour, artillery and machine-gunners, were given the task of taking the fortress as their first action of the war. Battalions from two brigades made the main assault further to the northwest while 2/6th Battalion created a diversion on the southern perimeter based on the deep and steep Wadi Muatered which was lined with barbed wire and covered with machine guns in sangars between the defense posts. Two companies were ordered as part of the battalions Operational Order No. 1 to occupy the north bank of the wadi between Posts 7 and 11 by dawn.

2023-12-30(A) Douglas Leslie vs Marc Hanna Australian winFun scenario that can be played quite quickly. Marc opted to set up,the Italian MG posts adjacent to the “cellar trench”. The benefit of this was that it strengthened the defence of this key position. The downside was that it allowed the Australians to waltz up to the trenches without any pickets allowing the use of star shells, which was particularly problematic from the defenders’ perspective when NVR reduced to one on their first player turn, The Australians quickly overwhelmed the eastern trenches in CC and easily took two of the western trenches. The final trench was another matter. The Australians took heavy casualties charging the cellar trench and it was touch and go whether they were going to make it. A half squad and hero died while taking out the Italian defenders there in hand to hand Close combat on the penultimate turn but the trench was reinforced in the final Italian turn. By that time the Aussies had an adjacent LMG squad directed by a 9-1 leader and another LMG squad in adjoining hexes. Fortuitous prep fire broke all of the Italian defenders apart from a berserk squad that was casualty reduced and this allowed an overwhelming CC attack to seize the trench on the final turn.
