Overview:
Elements from the 85th and 87th Mountain Infantry Regiments captured Mount Belvedere and Mount Gorgolesco just after dawn on 20 February 1945. As B and C Companies, 1st Battalion, 85th Mountain Infantry secured Gorgolesco, A Company, 1st Battalion moved along the Belvedere-Torraccia Ridgeline towards Hill 1088, overrunning it by 0845. A Company consolidated on Hill 1088 and prepared for a follow-up advance along the ridge. As it did so, it began to receive heavy fire from the next objective, Hill 1045. A Company was delayed further by a German counterattack against Hill 1088. By 1400, however, A Company was able to fight toward Hill 1045 against stiff resistance, reaching the lower approaches by approximately 1800.
