Overview:
Having spent several weeks reconnoitering the nearby ridgelines, the 1st Battalion, 86th Mountain Infantry Regiment prepared to make the opening moves on Operation Encore. Riva Ridge was a codename for the ridgeline comprising Mount Mancinello, Mount Semasoccia, Mount Cappel Buso, Pizzo di Capiano, and the connecting saddle ridges between them. It was decided that the assault on Mount Belvedere shoold be preceded by the capture of Riva Ridge. Division determined that simultaneous attacks using multiple routes would be necessary to effectively overcome German resistance as quickly as possible.Attacker: American (B Company, 86th Mountain Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division)
