Overview:
The direct attack on the German positions along the Bernhardt Line in and around the small village of San Pietro began on 8 December by Major General Geoffrey Keyes' II Corps of the US Fifth Army. San Pietro was defended by two battalion-sized elements of the 15.Panzer-Grenadier-Regiment (29.Panzer-Grenadier-Division) and a battalion of the 71st Infanterie Division, all part of the German Tenth Army's XIV Panzer Corps. In the center, the 141st Infantry Regiment, US 36th Infantry Division would attack San Pietro itself.
