Overview:
In May 1919, Bolshevik leadership declared Mongolia a free country. They expressed their hope and support for Mongolia to join the Soviet sphere of influence. As the Russian Civil War and Red Russian forces spread into the Far East that summer, Moscow renounced all Tsarist-Sino treaties. Peking became alarmed. Both Peking and Moscow understood that Mongolia was governed by the Bogd Khan, who was both politically and militarily weak. Moscow's actions forced a military response from Peking to help stabilize Mongolia within Chinese influence. In June, General Hsu Shon-cheng was dispatched with the 1st Frontier Defense Brigade to maintain peace in Mongolia.
