Overview:

Increasingly desperate to escape the Falaise Pocket, the trapped remnants of the German 7th Army and 5th Panzer Army found their path blocked by a fortified ridgeline which came to be known as “The Mace.” Isolated behind German lines the Polish 1st Armored Division repelled attack after attack from their elevated positions, taking hundreds of prisoners and blocking an enemy breakout. But on the morning of August 20, the exhausted Poles faced one last assault. The Mace stood square in the path of the 2nd SS Panzer division’s counter-attack from outside the pocket--a last ditch effort designed to free their trapped comrades.
