Overview:
The 37th Infantry Division's advance through Manila north of the Pasig River was greatly delayed. In their fighting withdrawal toward the river, the Japanese were systematically blowing up every large building in their path and setting hundreds more on fire. Rubble filled the streets. Every intersection seemed to have a roadblock with wire strung across the roadway. All routes of advance were covered by machine guns and mortars. Snipers picked off the unwary from upper stories and roofs of the buildings left standing. General Douglas MacArthur was extremely anxious to secure the power plant on Isla Provisor and the Legislative Building across the river. However, no American troops would get a chance to take these objectives until the area north of the Pasig River was cleared of the Japanese defenders.Attacker: American (37th Infantry Division)
Defender: Japanese (2nd Provisional Army Battalion)
