Overview:

From 16-18 February the 148th Infantry Regiment repeatedly assaulted the Japanese positions in the Medical School and Science Buildings and had penetrated the eastern portion of the University Hospital as well. On the morning of 19 February, the 5th Cavalry Regiment relieved the 148th Infantry from the from lines. Using Tanks, flamethrowers, and bazookas, the troopers finished clearing the Medical School and Assumption College, but the Japanese still held onto parts of the Science building. Turning their attention north towards Rizal Hall, the troopers found it fortified inside and out, with machine guns at every window.

2022-10-20(D) Jeff B vs John Fedoriw Japanese win8.5 hrsI did not put a single body in the Science Building, instead stacking the hospital and Rizal Hall with most everything I had. My opponent attacked with most of his force from the west, but strangely did not put any pressure whatsoever on Rizal Hall. He wisely stripped his three HTs of their MGs. His approach was very cautious, and by the end of Turn 2 he had assembled two monster kill stacks across from the hospital. This backed me off from the fringe, allowing him on Turn 3 to conceal most of his encroaching force. Turn 4 finally saw him make his initial assault, and I lost a HS plus an AA gun and crew to one HS for him. My reinforcements were much needed, with probably 2/3 of them making it to the hospital, 1/4 shoring up the still-untouched Rizall Hall, and the remaining 1/4 plus trucks and guns making for safe hiding in the far east. Turn 5 saw me lose my ART and another 1.5 squads, and the bleeding of bodies would only mount from thereon out. But the Americans made little actual progress as far as taken real estate, being very wary of being inside the building amongst concealed Japanese (with a FT to boot). Turn 6 saw me lose a couple crews and another squad, but I managed to kill an 8-0 and a HS. The Americans finally managed a toehold in a couple corners of the hospital. For the next couple turns the Americans continued to pound away at any Japanese troops that showed their faces at the windows, and by the end of Turn 8 the CVP count was 25-3. The five less hexes they needed to capture, combined with the nine from the Science Building and the two controlled in the hospital, meant the Americans would only have to take four more hexes. That meant I had to throw most everything I had left to the windows to try and hold them off on the last turn. Thankfully I still had a few full squads left and enough concealed units to do a fair job of standing up the the withering firepower, but the count rose to 32-5 or, in other words, a net gain of zero. This still meant four hexes needed. When my FT fried the contents of one adjacent hex, another hex was broken and pinned to the man, and miraculously one of the 9-2 and all accompanying units with him pinned, he was only in position to take three. I honestly felt I had zero chance going into this one, and despite this being as close of a finish as you could ask for, I felt this to be another disappointing scenario from SF as I thought my opponent played way too conservatively and it was an extremely boring defense.
