Overview:
By the end of December, the main Gustav Line had been penetrated and Allied troops were fighting their way forward to the Moro River, 4 miles (6.4km) to the north of which lay Ortona. The city was of strategic importance because it was one of the few usable deep-water ports on the east coast and was thus needed in order to shorten the Eighth Army's line of supply. Hitler ordered the city to be defended to the last man. The Battle of Ortona would be fought between two battalions of elite Fallschirmjäger (paratroops) and the assaulting Canadians of the 1st Infantry Division, most of whom were fresh recruits whose baptism of fire had occurred during the recent invasion of Sicily.Attacker: Canadian (Loyal Edmonton Regiment, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada and 1st Canadian Armoured Brigade's Three Rivers Regiment)
