Overview:
When the German Operation Citadel started, 61st and 50th Armies had prepared a counterstroke to draw enemy troops away from their main focus south of Orel. 12th Guards Heavy Breakthrough Tank Regiment spearheaded the assault along with numerous assault engineer units and new heavy assault guns. The Germans lost their MLR but 61st Army did not achieve a real breakthrough.
