Overview:
Operation CHARNWOOD opened with a massive air force, army & naval artillery barrage on the 16.Luftwaffe Felddivision's sector northwest of Caen. An hour later the British 3rd Infantry Division advanced south at a good pace, reached Lebisey; waiting for them were the recently arrived units of the 16.Luftwaffe Felddivision, for whom this engagement would be their first major action. The bombardment had inflicted nearly 75% casualties and those remaining survivors were left stunned and dazed. The division's commander, Generalmajor Karl Sievers "demented with grief" from so many losses, wandered the battlefield trying to reorganize his men.Attacker: British (Elements 3rd Infantry Division)
