After 11 days of walking from Asosa, the XI Battalion of Congolese Public Defense Force positioned itself around the city of Gambela. The Italians had defended their perimeter taking advantage of the rolling hills around the city, especially on a hill dubbed "sugar loaf". The Congolese troops had 800 meters to cover, under the threat of Italian automatic weapons, before reaching the outskirts of the city.
