Overview:
The objectives for Operation ARCHERY included attacking Maaloy Island to destroy a battery of coastal guns and the fish oil stored there (used in making glycerin for explosives). Having waited a day for the seas around Vaags Fjord to calm, Operation ARCHERY began with a bombardment of fifty shells a minute. With excellent coordination, the British and Norwegian Naval forces pummeled Maaloy island with high explosive and phosphorous smoke. A phosphorous smoke screen dropped by Hampden bombers was timed well with the smoke still on the island to give the Allied Commandos good cover. The Germans, demoralized by the bombardment, barely had time to recover before the Commandos attacked.Attacker: British/Norwegian (Elements of British No.3 Commando & Norwegian 1st Independent Company)
