Overview:
Immediately after the relief of Pointe-du-Hoc, Col. Canham, C.O. of the 116th Infantry Regiment, turned his attention to Grandcamp-les-Bains and its small but important harbor. 5th Rangers were ordered down the coastal road over a small, flooded valley and across the still-intact bridge. When they were driven back, naval artillery from the British cruiser HMS Glasgow was called in. Late that afternoon, 3rd Battalion, under Lt. Col Gene Meeks, was sent in along with three Shermans. “Tell Meeks to get his battalion moving and cross that damn bridge,” demanded Canham. The bridge was swept by enemy machine guns and mortar fire rained down on both approaches as Company K led the way.Attacker: American (Elements 116th Infantry Regt., 29th Infantry Division, 5th Rangers Btn & 743rd Tank Btn)
