Overview:
Though at first doubtful of their usefulness in Russia, by fall the German generals were finding uses for the Italians. Kleist sent Italian troops into the city of Stalino to help clear it of resistance in late October. Within the built up urban area, the Italians encountered a bitter, seemingly irrational enemy as immovable as the concrete they defended. Ordinary riflemen were not getting the job done, being gunned down in the streets like dogs. And so the local commanders called up the combat engineers with their flamethrowers. . .
