Overview:
The Axis assault on Odessa was performed in a series of fits and starts as each new Russian defensive ring was encountered, and enormous casualties taken to penetrate it. The Romanian commanders had requested time for rest and consolidation of their wrecked forces, but were denied. So German troops took up more and more responsibility as the attacks continued. The Soviets even counter-attacked in late August, retaking small villages that the Romanians had already paid dearly for. One such was Vakarzhany. As the Axis troops returned together they coordinated their attack, with the Germans making the main assault with a tank, and the depleted Romanians moving in on the flank.Attacker: German/Romanian (Manstein's 11th Army/Romanian 21st Infantry Division)
Defender: Russian (421st Rifle Division)
