Overview:
"THE SEIZING OF SAIDA" -- On 8th June 1941, the Allies launched Operation Export, to ensure control of the Levant, under the control of the Vichy government. The hope of symbolic resistance was lost, with the Vichy forces stubbornly defending the colony against Commonwealth soldiers and “dissident” Free French forces. Nevertheless, the Vichy were pushed backwards and lost several positions in both Lebanon and Syria. On 13th June, while advancing on Beirut, the 21st Brigade of the 7th Australian Division arrived at Saida, held by the 24th Mixed Colonial Regiment and supported by a tank squadron from the 6th Regiment de Chasseurs d’Afrique. The 2/16th Battalion, held in reserve for four days, led the attack with two companies in front, each followed by another company to clean up stubborn defensive posts. Around 1000, the men of Major Wain went forward after a short but violent artillery preparation.Attacker: Australian (Elements 2/16th Battalion, 21st Brigade)
