Overview:

During the Soviet March offensive, the German garrison at Kovel was surrounded. A relief of the Kovel Festung was ordered. Because of the boggy ground, only the 8th SS Company of the Wiking Division was able to get into Kovel by driving along a railroad. Unfortunately, two Panthers hit mines and were immobilized. These two Panthers, along with some grenadiers, were ordered to defend the railway. They soon became isolated themselves and were forced to fend off counterattacks for two days. On the 31st reinforcements of four Panthers, an APC and grenadiers arrived via the railway. Reconnoitering back west, two Panthers were lost to ATGs. Meanwhile one of the immobilized Panthers was repaired. For better defense it was decided to scrounge and blow up the other immobilized Panther, and dig-in around the train station. The train station “festung” held against another attack including artillery, anti-tank teams and two 76mm guns. Permission was granted to the train station festung to breakout. With only one mobile Panther, a breakout west to Czerkasy was initiated just as another Soviet attack began.
