Overview:

During the night of 23 March, the Allied 21st Army Group began the long-awaited Rhine crossing. The first division to cross was the British 51st Highland Division mounted in Buffaloes of the 4th Royal Tank and Northamptonshire Yeomanry of the special 79th Armoured Division. Among the first units to land was the 1st Black Watch of the 154th Brigade. Its objective was the village of Speldrop, to the north of their landing area. When they tried to clear the village, the defenders launched a counterattack, cutting the unit off from the rest of the brigade. To relieve the now-surrounded Black Watch and secure the remainder of the village, an attack was formulated with armor support supplied by DD tanks from the 79th Armoured Division.

2024-09-20(D) Mark McG vs Dave Wilson German winAlmost 2 scenarios in one, where the Germans set out to eliminate the Highlanders in the village (Bd 3), whilst delaying the advance of the relief force. The use of the DD taanks was a novelty bonus, and the first time I recollect using them in amphibious mode.

In the playing, the German OBA was initially used to break up the relief units, and then concentrated on the village. Not overwhelmingly succesful, and the spotter was hunted. The 76mm AT gun was sited on the western level 2 hill, which had an outstanding field of fire, created a threat to British movement at long range, including getting a HE hit on one DD tank at 40+ range to shred the screens.

The other 3 DD tanks crossed the Rhine, and dodged their way towards the town, ultimately falling foul of the infantry AT weapons. The German infantry ground down the Highlanders, eventually clearing the village, despite it being slowly burned down.

In the end, the Brits ran out of time, closing in on the village buildings, but not having enough time to attack the German remaining in the village. All the Highlanders were either killed or captured.
